0910 mbk team
BOXSCORE

SALEM, VA - Junior guard Qaiser Ahmed (Falls Church, Va., George C. Marshall) scored a team-high 19 points and sophomore Ryan Farrar (Ashburn, Va., Centreville, Va.) hit a pair of late three pointers to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 97-91 double OT win vs. Lynchburg College in the season opener on Friday at the V Foundation Classic at Roanoke College. UMW, 1-0, will face Roanoke on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Sophomore forward Tad Dickman (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) scored 18 points and added five assists and four rebounds, Farrar added 17 points, All-America center Brandon Altmann (Vienna, Va., James Madison) added 16 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, and freshman forward J.R. Gray (Staunton, Va., Robert E. Lee) added 13 points and 10 boards for the Eagles. Lynchburg was led by Bobby Kaiser's 27 points.

The Eagles fell behind in the first half by as many as eight, as Kaiser hit three straight three pointers for the Hornets, but were able to cut the deficit to one, 31-30, at halftime. UMW repeatedly built leads in the second half only to see Lynchburg answer with sveeral key three pointers, and the Eagles missed the final shot at the close of regulation to send the game to overtime.

UMW charged ahead in the first extra frame, but Lynchburg hit a three to tie the score and had the ball with a shot to win in the final seconds. But the Eagles didn't allow a Hornet shot, so the game went to overtime number two.

Nathan Campbell made a three pointer to give the Hornets a three point advantage at 85-82, but Gray hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to one at 4:05 left. UMW assumed the lead with 1:51 left on a big three by Farrar, who put the game away with another trey with 38 seconds left. Ahmed hit four free throws and Dickman two down the stretch for the six-point win.

The Eagles shot 44% from the floor (28-64), including 43% from three-point range (10-23), and made 31-38 free throws. UMW outrebounded Lynchburg, 51-38.
