UMW Women's Basketball Opens CAC Play With 60-41 Win Over Wesley

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team limited visiting Wesley College to 36% shooting and forced 33 turnovers in a 60-41 victory over the Wolverines on Wednesday in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener. The Eagles improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Mary Washington opened up a 33-17 halftime advantage, holding the visitors to five field goals and forcing 19 turnovers. Wesley led early, 8-4, but UMW went on a 25-4 run to seize the lead for good. The Wolverines warmed up to 40% from the floor in the second half, but the Eagles outscored them by three in the second frame, 27-24.

The Eagles were led by sophomore guard Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton), who scored 14 points on 4-5 three point shooting. Sophomore guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) scored 13 points and tied for the team lead with five assists, and freshman Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) scored 10 points. Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) scored nine points and grabbed a team-high seven boards for the Eagles. Wesley was led by Angie Owens' 18 points and 11 rebounds.
