UMW Names Richard Wilson as Head Men's and Women's Rowing Coach

The University of Mary Washington announces the hiring of Richard Wilson as its new head coach of men’s and women’s varsity rowing. Wilson joins the Mary Washington program as the third head coach in the program’s history.
Wilson has served the past two years as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. In his position at Delaware, Wilson was responsible for coaching novices and walk-ons for the women’s varsity program. Prior to that, Wilson worked extensively in real estate and the stock market in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and in Buffalo, N.Y.
He earned his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987, and gained master degrees in Public Affairs at the University of Texas, a master of business administration from the University of Dallas, and recently completed a master of science in exercise physiology from the University of Delaware.
Wilson’s coaching resume includes head coaching experience at Niagara University from 2003 to 2005, and for two seasons as an assistant at Delaware. He is certified as a level three coach in both technical and theory by Rowing Canada and Canada’s National Coaching Certification program.
On the water, Wilson is a three-time champion of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and co-created a rowing club at Niagara University for men and women. In high school, he captured two medals at the Canadian Schoolboy Championships and one gold medal while competing at Ridley College in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, Canada. Collegiately, he competed for four years at Penn. A longtime member of the West Side Rowing Club in Buffalo, N.Y., he served as coxswain on several championship boats in recent years. Wilson has also proven successful while competing for the St. Catherine’s Rowing Club as well as the Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia.
