ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - Sophomore guard
Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 63-51 victory at St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night. The Eagles improve to 10-3 overall, and 5-0 in conference play.
The lead changed hands several times in the opening 10 minutes of play, with the Seahawks holding as much as a four-point lead at 10-6. The Eagles gained a 11-10 lead with a 5-0 run, keyed by a Wimmer three pointer, and would not trail again. UMW used an 8-0 run to move the lead to 28-19 with 2:53 to play in the half, and held a 32-26 advantage at halftime.
The second half saw the Seahawks close the gap to 32-29 just over two minutes into the half. But UMW answered with a 9-0 run to lead, 41-29, with 13:35. The Eagles moved the led to as many as 14 in the final minutes, holding a 12-point advantage at the final buzzer.
In addition to Wimmer, the Eagles saw 10 points in 14 minutes from freshman
Kate Vennergrund (Centreville, Va., Centreville), and 10 points from freshman
Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock). St. Mary's was led by Jamie Roberts' 16 points.
The Eagles shot 41% from the floor (23-56), and went 14-19 from the free throw line. St. Mary's shot 33% from the field and went 9-11 from the line. St. Mary's committed 20 turnovers, and UMW registered three blocked shots and eight steals.
The Eagles will host sixth-ranked Marymount University in a battle for first place in the CAC standings on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
