BOXSCORE

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 10-2 halftime advantage and narrowly held on for a 10-9 victory at McDaniel College on Wednesday in Westminster, Md. The Eagles, winners of two straight, are 2-3 on the season.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-2 advantage after one quarter. Ryan Motyka (Germantown, Md., Watkins Mill) opened the scoring just eight seconds into play, and Johnny Hink (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) scored at 9:45 left on a Motyka assist. After a McDaniel score, Kohl Meyer (Shawnee, N.J., Shawnee) scored unassisted before another Green Terror score to close the quarter.

UMW raced to seven goals in the second quarter to take a 10-2 lead at intermission. In the frame, junior Mark Bowler (Cary, N.C., Cary) scored three times, and Meyer, Motyka, Harry Snyder (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's-Belfield), and Sean Dacey (Round Hill, Va., Loudoun Valley) each scored once.

The second half saw the Green Terror score twice in the third quarter and five times in the fourth. With the Eagles leading by one with 52 seconds left, McDaniel won the faceoff and called timeout. With two seconds left, the Green Terror got an open shot, but sophomore goalie Matt Prin (Olney, Md., Sherwood) made the biggest of his 15 saves to preserve the Eagle victory.

McDaniel led UMW in shots, 47-14, and had 48 ground balls to 35 for the Eagles. McDaniel was 4-8 on extra man opportunities while the Eagles were 1-1.

Mary Washington will host the College of Wooster on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
