GAME TWO BOX
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Senior catcher Nick Espinosa (Arnold, Md., Broadneck)'s two-run single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 6-5 win over Penn State-Altoona in the nightcap of their Sunday doubleheader at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles won the opener, 12-1, and are now 4-0 on the season.
The Eagles entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 5-3, but senior left fielder Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) led off with a double off the wall in centerfield and freshman 1b Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County) followed with a walk. With one out, Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) reached on an error that allowed Wright to score and pinch runner Robinson Dorion to reach third. With runners on second and third and the infield in, Espinosa's grounder up the middle reached the outfield, allowing both runners to score and the Eagles to remain unbeaten.
In the game senior shortstop Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor) went 4-4 at the plate, while Wright singled, doubled, and drove in two. Freshman pitcher Nick Corbin (Staunton, Va., Buffalo Gap) took the win in relief, allowing one hit in 1.1 innings.
In the opener, UMW scored 12 runs on 13 hits to win, 12-1. Leading the way was freshman pitcher Matt Abramson (Malvern, Pa., Conestoga), who went the distance allowing one earned run on two hits in seven innings, walking three and striking out two. At the plate, UMW was led by Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga), who singled, doubled, and homered, scoring three runs and driving in three. Bergen was 3-5 with three runs scored, and Jordan, Wright, and Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) each added a pair of hits.
The Eagles will next play on Friday at York College in a Capital Athletic Conference game starting at 2:30 p.m.
