Ryan Sawyers comes to UMW for his 13th season of being a
collegiate pitching coach. Over the years Coach Sawyers has
mentored many professional draft picks as well as dozens of
All-Conference players. Sawyers joins back up with Head Coach Wayne
Riser after they spent three seasons together at Shepherd
University including the 2002 season, the best in Shepherd
history.
Over his coaching career, Sawyers has spent time at all three
levels of NCAA baseball. During his four seasons at Purdue
University he helped assemble and guide the best pitching staffs in
Boilermaker history. In 2011, his West Virginia Wesleyan staff
posted 28 wins after returning only 2 wins from the previous season
and won the southern division for the first time since 1996. His
staffs have established themselves in the school record books at
all of his collegiate coaching stops.
In 2008, Sawyers was the head coach of the Springfield (IL)
Sliders in the Central Illinois Collegiate League (now the Prospect
League). The Sliders finished their inaugural season as one of best
teams in summer collegiate baseball. Sawyers led the Sliders to the
first-half championship, the regular season championship and the
CICL Playoff Championship.
He earned his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from
West Virginia Wesleyan and his master's degree in Athletic Coaching
Education from West Virginia University. He was a member of the
1997 JUCO World Series team at Allegany College of Maryland and the
1999 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of
the Year.
Coach Sawyers is married to his wife Jaime. They live in Prince
William County with their son Brady and daughter Chelsea. Coach
Sawyers is a proud member of the Board of Directors for the
Gainesville Haymarket Baseball League, a member of the Cal Ripken
Baseball League.
