Senior forward Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) scored one goal and assisted on another to classmate defender Heidi Sheehan (Scituate, Mass., Scituate) in leading the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Wesley College on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Eagles scored first as Sheehan scored off a penalty corner with assists going to Jones and Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) with 6:39 to play in the first half. Jones scored herself with 4:10 remaining on an assist from junior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford).
Wesley outshot Mary Washington, 9-8, but UMW led in penalty corners, 13-6. Senior Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) had five saves and senior defender Nicole Conti (Virginia Beach, Va., Bayside) had one defensive save for Mary Washington, while Wesley's Sarah Johnson had six saves.
The Eagles will host Catholic University on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
