The University of Mary Washington field hockey team held significant leads in shots and penalty corners, but allowed a goal with 1:14 remaining in a 1-0 loss to St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference action for Homecoming on Saturday at the Battleground. UMW falls to 10-7 overall and 5-2 in CAC play, and will be the third seed in next week's CAC Tournament.
UMW led in shots, 9-3, and had 19 penalty corners to four for the visitors, but could not find the cage. St. Mary's earned the win with a goal by Brooke Massimore with 1:14 to go.
Eagle senior Chrissy Bowdren didn't make a save in 70 minutes of action, while Lydia Garcia had two saves for St. Mary's.
The Eagles will close the regular season with a road contest at Randolph-Macon College at 3:30 p.m.
