Senior midfielder Lisa Charney scored the game's only goal 4:24 into overtime to lead the fifth-ranked university of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference win over St. Mary's College on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 15-1 on the year, and 4-0 in league play.
In a game that saw the Eagles hold a 19-1 advantage in shots and 17-7 lead in penalty corners, Charney was able to elude the defensive-minded Seahawks with a blast in traffic with 4:24 elapsed into extra time.
UMW senior goalkeeper Claire Gianelle had no saves for UMW, while Christy Bishop had 10 saves for the Seahawks, with Charney adding a defensive save in addition to scoring the game's only goal.
Mary Washington will host Wesley College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in another CAC clash as part of Homecoming.
