UMW Field Hockey Places Seven on All-CAC Team; Charney Named Co-Player of the Year

Senior midfielder Lisa Charney was named as the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference co-Player of the Year as seven Eagles were recognized on the All-CAC Field Hockey Team, released today. Freshman Jenna Steele was named the Rookie of the Year, and head coach Lindsey Elliott was named Coach of the Year.

YORK, Pa. - Mary Washington and Salisbury have been among the top-ranked field hockey teams in the country all year, and the results of the 2012 All-CAC voting reflected that. The CAC champion Eagles placed seven players on the all-conference squad, including Co-Player of the Year Lisa Charney, while the second-place Sea Gulls earned six All-CAC berths.

Charney, making her second-straight first-team All-CAC appearance, tied Wesley junior Madison Leone in the voting of the coaches for the Player of the Year award. Leone, a midfielder like Charney, is a three-time first-team All-CAC honoree. Leone is the second Wolverine in the last three years, joining 2010 honoree Brooke Tadlock, to be named CAC Field Hockey Player of the Year. Charney is the sixth UMW player, and the first since Jessica Morris in 2001, to be named CAC Field Hockey Player of the Year.

Eagles joining Charney as first-team all-stars this year are junior forward Caitlin Baker, sophomore forward Amy Abernathy and freshman defender Haley Kane. Second-team recognition was earned by freshman forward Jenna Steele, the 2012 CAC Rookie of the Year, along with junior midfielder Florence George and senior goalie Claire Gianelle.

Steele's rookie award marks the third-straight year, and fourth time since 2000, that a UMW player was named CAC Rookie of the Year. Baker, a three-time All-CAC honoree, was the 2010 CAC Rookie of the Year while Abernathy was the 2011 CAC Co-Rookie of the Year. Baker and George are three-time all-conference honorees while Abernathy joins Charney as two-time first-team all-stars.

The engineer of UMW's success is second-year coach Lindsey Elliott, a former All-American at Salisbury who was selected by her peers as the 2012 CAC Coach of the Year. She is just the second Eagles mentor to win the Coach of the Year award, joining five-time winner Dana Hall in that exclusive club. Hall's most recent award was in 2010.

Salisbury earned three first-team All-CAC nods and three second-team awards. First-team honors were presented to seniors Erica Henderson, Kristina Fusco and Amber Holland while second-team recognition went to senior forward Melissa Slocum, junior defender Katie Hastings and sophomore midfielder Summer Washburn. Henderson, a forward, Fusco, a midfielder, and Holland, a defender, are all two-time all-stars while Slocum, Washburn and Hastings were named to the all-conference team for the first time.

Leone was one of five Wesley players to earn post-season recognition after the Wolverines finished third in the regular-season standings and advanced to the CAC championship game for the third-straight season. Senior goalie Elizabeth Groom, a second-team all-star last year, joined Leone on the 2012 first-team All-CAC squad. Sophomore forward Devin Price, sophomore defender Brooke Gannon and senior defender Lindsey Martin each picked up second-team awards.

St. Mary's and York each gained three positions on the 2012 All-CAC squad.

The Seahawks placed senior forward Lauriann Parker and senior defender Ali McIntosh on the top All-CAC squad while senior midfielder Paige Decker earned second-team recognition. Parker was the 2009 CAC Rookie of the Year and a two-time first-team all-star while Decker was the 2011 Co-Rookie of the Year.

Senior defender Danielle Gaitings led the Spartans' contingent onto the 2012 all-star squad, earning a first-team berth on defense. Second-team honors went to junior forward Kailey Brewer and senior midfielder Ashton Burk. All three Spartans are first-team all-stars.
