With Thursday's 3-0 field hockey win over Bridgewater College, the University of Mary Washington fall athletic teams improved to 10-0 on the season through the opening seven days of play.
The aforementioned field hockey team improved to 3-0 with its win on Thursday, and already has a win over 16th ranked Lebanon Valley College - their second in as many years over the Flying Dutchwomen. UMW also topped Roanoke College, 8-0, on Tuesday. Senior Lisa Charney leads UMW with five goals through three games.
The men's soccer team is also 3-0 after opening the season last weekend with 1-0 wins over Hampden-Sydney College and Eastern Mennonite University, and then topping Randolph-Macon College, 3-0, on Wednesday. Freshman Patrick Kelly has scored three goals in the Eagles' 3-0 start.
UMW's women's soccer team has had two improbable 5-4 wins to open the season, including a double-overtime win over Bridgewater with the game winner coming from Erin Reynolds in the final minute of play, followed the next day by freshman Jessica Bednarcik scoring in the final minute of regulation as UMW took a 5-4 win over Averett University after trailing, 3-1, at halftime.
Dee Conway's volleyball team has cruised to a pair of 3-0 wins over McDaniel College and Bridgewater College. Sophomore Kayla Crawford and junior Kaitlynn Wickersham led the Eagles in the wins.
This weekend's action will include several stiff challenges for the Eagles. The field hockey team will host seventh ranked Lynchburg College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and women's soccer will host Catholic University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The men's soccer team will visit 17th ranked and traditional power Messiah College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., and the volleyball squad will play a quad match at Stevenson University, who won thirty matches last season before leaving the Capital Athletic Conference.
