The University of Mary Washington athletic department celebrated the 40 year anniversary of Title IX during halftime of Saturday's women's basketball game on February 2. The festivities included a reading of the NCAA materials explaining Title IX by senior volleyball player Karissa Herrick, a video montage celebrating 40 years of Title IX at Mary Washington, and a "living link" of past, present, and future NCAA women's athletes that spread across the entirety of the arena floor.
"We are very pleased to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the landmark legislation Title IX", said UMW Athletic Director Ken Tyler. "Its impact on college athletics has been significant, and, as the father of a young daughter, I am grateful for what it has done for girls and women. Title IX has special significance at Mary Washington, considering our roots as a women’s college and our long-standing commitment to an inclusive and broad-based athletic department. The “living link” of girls and women stretching the length of the court was a vivid reminder of the exciting and beneficial past, present, and future of Title IX”.
