The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 72-68 decision at Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fall to 13-7 overall and 7-5 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
Salisbury jumped out to an early lead, and held a lead of as many as 10 points in the opening frame. The Eagles trailed by nine, 34-25, at halftime.
UMW scored the first eight points of the second half to cut the deficit to one, 34-33, less than a minute into the second half. Mary Washington assumed its first lead at 46-45 with 12 minutes remaining, and led by as many as five, 58-53, with 6:24 left.
Salisbury went on an 11-2 run to gain a four-point lead, and would not trail again. Salisbury shot 46% from the floor, while UMW was limited to 38%. The Eagles were led by freshman Bradley Riester (Richmond, Va., Monacan), who scored 15 points, and freshman E.J. Willis (Alexandria, Va., T.C. Williams), who added 12 points and seven rebounds. Walt Smith (Alexandria, Va., T.C. Williams) had eight points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.
The Sea Gulls were led by David Pearman's 23 points. Mary Washington will host Hood College on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m.
