The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-9 decision at St. Mary's College on Thursday afternoon in the regular season finale. The Eagles enter play in next week's Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with an overall record of 7-8.
The Eagles fell behind, 2-0, before Harry Snyder (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's-Belfield) scored on a Brian Deal (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shady Side Academy) assist. After the Seahawks added another goal, UMW's Kohl Meyer (Shawnee, N.J., Shawnee) scored on another Deal assist, and Brian Meaney (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., Cold Spring Harbor) scored the first of his three goals to tie the score at three.
The Seahawks took a 4-3 lead with 1:18 remaining in the half but the Eagles knotted the score just before halftime, as Meyer scored unassisted with 11 seconds remaining.
Mary Washington took its first lead of the game as Meaney scored on a Snyder assist to open the third quarter, and the Eagles led, 6-5, on a Ryan Motyka (Germantown, Md., Watkins Mill) goal with 11:00 left in the third. The Seahawks responded with a pair of goals to take a 7-6 lead before Dan Coats (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) re-tied the score at 7-7 on a Snyder assist.
The Seahawks assumed control of the game by scoring five of the next six goals of the game. Meaney and Snyder each scored in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell by four goals.
Meaney led the Eagles with three goals, while Snyder added two goals and two assists and Meyer added two goals and one assist. Goalie Matt Prin (Olney, Md., Sherwood) made 11 saves for the Eagles in taking the loss.
Mary Washington will visit York College in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
