The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team used five first half goals en route to a 7-0 victory over Hood College in Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday in Frederick, Md. The Eagles improve to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Eagles jumped on the scoreboard at 25:52 on a goal from junior T.L. Tutor (Islesboro, Me., Gould Academy) on a pass from Robby Davis (Locust Grove, Va., James Monroe). UMW then scored three times in 1:19 to put the game away. Freshman Smith Norton (Alexandria, Va., Annandale) netted his first collegiate goal at 32:42, and then senior Michael Johnson (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) scored 40 seconds later unassisted. Johnson scored again 39 seconds later on an assist from John Tarley (Williamsburg, Va., Jamestown) to up the lead to 4-0. Tarley then scored his second goal in as many games with a tally on a feed from Robby Davis with 26 seconds left before halftime.
In the second half, UMW received goals from Matt Lamb (Westport, Conn., Staples) at 56:52, and from Matt Alter (Rumson, N.J., Rumson Fairhaven Regional) on a pass from Norton at 85:40.
Mary Washington outshot the Blazers, 33-4, and had six corner kicks to two for Hood. Emmett Rutkowski (Culpeper, Va., Culpeper), Alec Constantine (McLean, Va., Langley), and Matt Eby (Maidens, Va., Goochland) combined for the shutout for the Eagles. Shawn Fernholz and William Lane each had four saves for Hood.
The Eagles will host Wesley College in CAC play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
