UMW Dominates Individual Awards on VaSID All-State Tennis Teams

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- The 2011-12 Virginia Sports Information Directors College Division All-State Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams were announced today and three schools shared the six individual honors.

The University of Mary Washington earned both Coach Of The Year awards with Patrick Catullo earning the women’s honor and Todd Helbing on the men’s side. Catullo took the women’s team to a 16-8 record and winning the Capital Athletic Conference title along with advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. For the men, Helbing took the UMW men to a 16-11 with winning the Capital Athletic Conference title and advancing to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

For the Player of the Year awards, Mary Washington sophomore Lindsay Raulston won that honor. A Franklin, Va. native, earned All-America honors in singles and was the CAC Player of the Year finishing with a 25-5 record and advancing to the NCAA Division III Singles National Championship match.

On the men’s side, Christopher Newport senior Eric Shulman took home that honor. The Falls Church, Va. native finished 18-6 on the year earning USA South Player of the Year and USA South Tournament MVP honors for the third straight year. His only Division III loss this year came in the round of 16 at the NCAA Division III Championships where he earned an at-large bid.

The Rookie of the Year honors went to Sonja Meighan of Washington & Lee and Evan Charles of Mary Washington. Meighan, a McLean Va. native, was 21-7 in singles and was a 2012 First Team All-American after advancing to the round of eight in the NCAA Tournament. She earned ODAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors along with ITA Atlantic South Region Rookie of the Year award.

Charles took the Men’s Rookie of the Year award after a freshman season finishing 19-15 in singles and earning All-America honors in doubles going 24-16. The Richmond, Va. native was a first-team All-CAC performer in singles and doubles along with being named the CAC Rookie of the Year.
