The sixteenth-ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated Penn St.-Harrisburg University and Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles topped Penn St.-Harrisburg 7-2, and CNU 9-0. UMW improves to 12-2 overall, and 3-0 in the CAC.
Against the Nittany Lions, UMW jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles action. Ryland Byrd and Michael Fleming won at one doubles 8-0; Moses Hutchison and Ryan Berry won at two doubles 8-0; Matt Miles and Connor Macmurdy won at three doubles 8-2.
In singles action, UMW only lost two matches. Patrick Hughes won at one singles 6-0, 6-0; Joseph Brown won at two singles 6-1, 6-0; Derek Hagino won at three singles 6-0, 6-1; and Berry won at four singles 6-0, 6-0. The Nittany Lions won at five singles 6-0, 6-1 and at six singles 6-4, 6-4.
Against CNU, UMW continued their dominance in doubles action as they didn't lose a match on the day. Fleming and Byrd won at one doubles 8-4; Miles and Moses Hutchison won at two doubles 8-3; Hughes and Hagino won at three doubles 8-3.
The Eagles then pulled away in singles action as they won every match in two sets. Miles won at one singles 6-1, 6-3; Hughes won at two singles 6-1, 6-4; Brown won at three singles 6-3, 6-3; Hutchison won at four singles 6-3, 7-5; Byrd won at five singles 6-4, 6-4; and Cole Tecce won at six singles 6-0, 6-1.
UMW will be back in action on Wednesday, April 4, as they will take on Southern Virginia and Frostburg St. at 4 p.m. in Buena Vista, Va.
