The \#1-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-4 halftime lead and cruised to a 18-9 victory over \#18 University of Mary Washington, 19-9, in the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference championship game on Friday evening in Salisbury. The Eagles fall to 11-5 on the season.
After Salisbury started the game with three goals in the opening three minutes, the Eagles responded with three straight scores to tie the score at three. Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas, Cy-Creek) connected before Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va., Robinson) netted a pair of goals, the latter coming with 23:16 left in the first half.
The Sea Gulls then scored eight straight goals, leading 11-3 before the Eagles used a Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) goal in the final minute of the half to make the halftime score 11-4.
After Salisbury scored three straight to up the lead to 14-4, the teams essentially traded goals throughout the second half, with senior Brittany Butler (Easton, Conn., Joel Barlow) leading the Eagles with all of her team-high three scvores in the second half. Kimmelman and Kennedy each scored twice for UMW.
Salisbury outshot the Eagles, 43-21, and had 16 draw controls to 13 for UMW. The Eagles held an 18-17 edge in ground balls. Freshman Leigh Ann Redefer (Lewes, Del., Cape Henlopen) made 17 saves for the Eagles, who will await a possible NCAA Tournament bid next month. UMW will visit Randolph-Macon College on May 4 at 4:00 p.m.
