Kennedy's Nine Points Leads #18 UMW Women's Lax Past York, 13-8

Junior attacker Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) scored five goals and added four assists to lead the 18th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 13-8 victory over visiting York College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 5-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference play, while the Spartans fall to 5-1 and 1-1.

Kennedy opened the scoring in the opening minute, and assisted on the first of junior Lauren Callison (Stevensville, Md., Kent Island) 's three straight scores to push the lead to 2-0. After a Spartan score, Kennedy assisted Callison twice, followed by goals from Kirsten West (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's-Belfield) and Kennedy to push the score to 6-1.

York's Kim Wayson scored twice to cut the deficit to 6-3, but Kennedy scored on an Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va., Robinson) assist to push the score to 7-3 at halftime.

The second half began with Kennedy scoring unassisted and then assisting Erin Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Bishop Sullivan) to push the lead to 9-3. The two teams traded goals from there, with the Spartans scoring twice in the final minute to cut the final deficit to 13-8.

In addition to Kennedy's five goals and four assists, Callison had three scores and Kimmelman added one goal and two assists.

The Spartans led in shots, 27-25,  while the Eagles held a 19-17 edge in ground balls. Junior goalie Danielle Guigli (Wellesley, Mass., Wellesley) had 12 saves for Mary Washington. The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Wesley College in another CAC game at 4:00 p.m.
