The University of Mary Washington women’s soccer team scored two first half goals and held on in the second half against the wind in a 2-0 victory over York College of Pa. on Saturday at the Battleground in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 8-4-1 overall and 3-2 in CAC play, while York falls to 5-10-2 and 5-3.
The Eagles scored their first goal at 13:54 when senior Sarah Tryon (Fairfax Station, Va., South County) lofted a shot toward goal from outside the box. Junior Amy Olson (Crofton, Md., Arundel) redirected it out of the air with a header and found the nets. The Eagles upped the lead to 2-0 just before halftime, as freshman Lindsay Bennett (Lititz, Pa., Manheim Township) scored off a Sarah McMillan (Vienna, Va.) corner kick at 43:24.
Mary Washington held a 10-9 edge in shots, and York had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. UMW junior Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) made three saves in the Eagle net, and also made several outstanding plays on crossing balls in the air to wipe out several York chances.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they visit Stevenson University at 4:30 p.m. in another CAC matchup.
