Junior midfielder Excy Herrera (Alexandria, Va., Thomas Edison) scored in the third minute and sophomore Kelsey Carter (Richmond, Va., Mills Godwin) added a goal and an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Alvernia University on Sunday at the Battleground. UMW improves to 4-0 on the season.
The Eagles showed great pressure early, making several scoring chances, capped by Herrera, who recieved a cross from Carter and found the nets at 2:47. Both teams had several quality chances throughout the rest of the half, but the score remained 1-0 at intermission.
Carter found the nets for the second straight day at 63:05 on a pass from senior Amy Olson (Crofton, Md., Arundel) for an insurance score. Defensively, senior Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) made four big saves to preserve the shutout.
Mary Washington led in shots, 24-10, and had six corner kicks to three for the Crusaders.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Randolph-Macon College at 4:00 p.m.
