#14 UMW Women's Tennis Tops Towson in Season Opener

Sophomore Casey Malcolm (Canandaigua, N.Y., Canandaigua Academy) scored the clinching victory to lead the University of Mary Washington women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Division I Towson University on Sunday at the University Tennis Center. 

The Eagles dropped the doubles point, with Courtney Goimarac (Hudson, Ohio, Hudson) and Katie Schafer (New Market, Md., Linganore) winning at one, 8-6, but UMW falling at two and three. Needing to win four singles matches, the Eagles got wins from Goimarac at one, 7-5, 6-1, and Schafer winning at two, 6-0, 6-0. Danielle Velardi (Branford, Conn., Branford) won at six, 6-1, 6-4, setting the stage for Malcolm's clinching 7-6 (3), 6-4 win.

Mary Washington will compete again next Saturday when the Eagles host George Mason University at 10:00 a.m. and York College at 4:00 p.m.
