Raulston Named CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year as UMW Dominates All-CAC Teams
YORK, Pa. - In 2011, Mary Washington's Lindsay
Raulston (Franklin, Va./Southampton Academy) began her
collegiate tennis career in the footsteps of teammate Courtney
Goimarac as a first-team all-star and conference Rookie of the
Year. This season, Raulston continues on Goimarac's path by
earning two more all-conference nods and being named the 2012 CAC
Women's Tennis Player of the Year.
Raulston was picked by
the CAC coaches as a first-team singles and doubles all-star this
year. It is the ninth-straight year, and 20th time in the
22-year history of CAC women's tennis, that a UMW player was named
the Player of the Year She is the 15th different Eagle to win
the award and one of seven UMW players to win both the Rookie of
the Year and Player of the Year awards during their careers - just
like Goimarac.
Freshman teammate
Alexandra Ritter (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial),
who earned first-team All-CAC as the fourth-singles player for UMW,
was named the 2012 CAC Rookie of the Year. It is the sixth time in
the last seven years, and 11th time since the award was added in
1997, that an Eagle newcomer was picked by the conference coaches
as the Rookie of the Year.
Patrick
Catullo made it a clean sweep (again) for the Eagles as he
was selected by his peers as the Dr. Edward Hegmann CAC
Coach of the Year award winner.
The award was recently
named by the CAC Board of Directors to honor former UMW women's
tennis coach and retiring Athletic Director Dr. Edward
Hegmann, who won eight CAC Coach of the Year awards and led
the Eagles to three national championships and nine straight CAC
championships after the league was formed in 1990 through his
retirement as coach in 1999. He was named the NCAA Div. III
National Coach of the Year in 1988 and1999.
Catullo won the CAC
award for the seventh-straight season after guiding UMW to its
ninth-straight CAC crown (and 20th in CAC history). He is one
of three Eagle coaches to be honored by his peers along with
Hegmann (eight times from 1991 to 1999) and Cindy Vander Berg
(three times from 2000 to 2004).
Joining Raulston on
both the All-CAC singles and doubles first teams are seniors
Michelle Meadows (Virginia Beach, Va./Collegiate),
Jocelyn Lewis (Oakton, Va./Oakcrest) and Catherine
Malcolm (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy). UMW junior
Cassandra Bowman (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) was a second-team
All-CAC singles honoree and a first-team doubles pick at the No. 3
position with sophomore Anna Richman (Bear,
Del./Middletown).
Meadows finished her
career as a four-time singles and doubles all-star, including three
first-team honors in both singles and doubles. Lewis, Bowman
and Malcolm have also won All-CAC recognition in past seasons.
Six Salisbury players
earned All-CAC honors, including first-team singles players junior
Elaina Iosue (Damascus, Md./Damascus), freshman Roxy Alban
(Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and junior Victoria Handlin (Annapolis,
Md./Broadneck). Second-team All-CAC singles awards were
presented to junior Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) and
freshmen Katie Youlious (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and Allison Lutz
(Salisbury, Md./Parkside).
All six Sea Gulls, who
finished second in the CAC regular-season and post-season
championship tournament, also earned second-team doubles all-star
recognition. Iosue and Poppe are repeat selections in All-CAC
singles honors and joined Handlin as a repeat choice on the All-CAC
doubles squad.
Two members of the
third-place St. Mary's Seahawks - freshmen Emily Stumpfig
(Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Lauren Rost (Darnestown,
Md./Poolesville) - were picked as second-team all-stars.
