Lynchburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's volleyball team lost 3-1 to Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles won the second set, but lost the first, third and fourth to fall 3-1. The loss drops the Eagles to 9-6 on the season.
In set number one, the Eagles got out to a 4-2 lead behind two straight Caroline Porco (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) service aces. Lynchburg fought back rattling off six straight points to take an 8-4 lead. The rest of the set was back and forth with each team exchanging points. The Hornets would pull away late and take set number one 25-23.
The second set saw another back and forth affair. The Eagles pulled away late. With the score 20-18 in favor of UMW, the Eagles won five of the next seven points to win set number two, capped off with a Sarah Weber (Midlothian, Va./James River) service ace, 25-20.
Lynchburg dominated set three, winning 25-19, which set up a do or die fourth set for the Eagles. The Eagles responded, jumping out to a 12-7 lead forcing a Hornet timeout. Following the timeout, much of the same occured. The Eagles stepped on the gas pedal, increasing the lead to 19-15. Lynchburg closed out the match with a 10-3 run to win the final set 25-22.
Kayla Crawford (Richmond, Va./Powhatan) led all players with 12 kills. Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) continued her strong week with 10 kills of her own. Freshman Emma Olson (Oakton, Va./Oakton) chipped in 29 assists for the Eagles, who finished with 35 kills.
The women's volleyball team returns to action on Wednesday, October 9th. The team travels to Frostburg to take on the Bobcats with a match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
