The 14th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime to visiting fifth ranked Tufts University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. UMW falls to 5-3 on the season.
In a very close contest, each team had a series of penalty corners and shots in the second half, after a relatively quiet first half both ways. Neither team could capitalize, sending the game to extra frame number one. With 7:07 left in the first overtime, after a scramble in front of cage, Tufts' Rachel Hamilton scored on a Fallon Shaughnessy assist for the game winner.
Tufts led in shots on the day, 15-7, and UMW held an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt had nine saves, while Tufts' Emily Polinski had four stops for the Jumbos.
Mary Washington will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Catholic University at 4:00 p.m.
