UMW Men's Basketball Falls at York, 76-68

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team ran into a buzzsaw at York College on Saturday afternoon, as the hosts jumped out to a 21-4 lead en route to 58% shooting for the game in a 76-68 win over the Eagles in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles are now tied in the loss column for first place in the CAC standings with St. Mary's, whom UMW swept this season.

York poured on the lead early, limiting UMW to just one field goal, a Mike Harvey three pointer, over the first 10 minutes of play. The Eagles were able to cut the deficit to eight at 34-26 in the final minute of the half, before the Spartans scored the final seven of the half to take a 15-point advantage to halftime, 41-26.

In the second half, UMW methodically cut into the deficit and trailed by as few as five in the waning minutes, but the Eagles couldn't make enough shots down the stretch as York continually came up with scoring possessions down the stretch.

The loss overshadows career highs from freshman Sean Armstrong (21 points in 18 minutes before fouling out) and sophomore Chad Canady, who added 14 points and five rebounds in 16 minutes. Also in double figures for UMW was sophomore Bradley Riester, who added 15 points. Paul Kouvaris had 17 points in 38 minutes to lead York.

Mary Washington must now win its final two games of the regular season to clinch the top seed in the CAC Tournament. UMW hosts Stevenson University on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. for senior day.
