UMW Rowing Competes at MARC Championsips

On Friday evening, 26 April 2019, the UMW rowing team headed to Lewisberry, PA to prepare for a full day of rowing Saturday at the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Championship regatta, hosted by Susquehanna University on Lake Pinchot.  Lake Pinchot does not have rowing docks, so crews wade into the water to launch and recover their boats.  Extremely strong headwinds between 15 to 25 mph made for some tough rowing, and stronger winds between 9:00am and 3:00 caused a 6-hour delay in racing with some races being cancelled, and other races condensed into multiple heat time trials.

UMW's first event of the morning was a heat race for the men's varsity 8+.  There were three heats, with the top two finishers in each heat advancing to the grand final race.  UMW placed fifth in their heat, with Bucknell and Johnson & Wales advancing to the grand final.   The other four crews that advanced to the grand final were Adrian College, Marietta College, George Mason, and Washington College.  Based on overall times of the three heats, UMW placed 11th out of 17 entries.

UMW's second event didn't occur until after 3:00 PM due to a 6-hour delay for high winds.  Some afternoon races were turned into multiple heat time trial races.  The UMW Men's Freshman/Novice 4+ of Peter Kristensen, Kevin Connolly, Rory Cameron, Ben Loppacker, and coxswain Delaney Resweber easily won the first heat, beating the second place boat Catholic by 48 seconds.  Then it was just a matter of waiting to see the winning time in the second heat.  UMW prevailed, beating the winner of the second heat, Lafayette, by just over 21 seconds to win the gold medals for the men's Fr/Nov 4+ race.

The UMW lady Eagles also rowed a strong race into the stiff headwinds, but lost to Penn State and finishing just 10 seconds behind host Susquehanna.
